Im a geek

I don't know why, but I have been watching the history channel a lot lately. Last night I was up until 3am watching a show on the history about.....shovels! They really are quite fascinating. Not just some steel on the end of a stick - there really is a pretty good amount of science that goes into designing those things.

A few random facts from the show:
  • the oldest continuous running company in America is a the Ames shovel company which was founded in 1774 illegally by a blacksmith. (Remember all of the raw materials were just supposed to be mined in America and sent back to Brittain at the time, so actually "finishing" and of the raw materials was illegal.)
  • The Ames company produced over 11 million shovels for WWII
  • When we were finishing the Panama Canal the workers had steam shovel races to see which steam shovel made the most headway each day. The winner got to put a broom on the top of thier rig and fly it kind of like a flag. They even had magazines in the states about the progress and people would bet on this stuff.
  • Over 1 million injuries are sustained every year from people shoveling their driveway (back, rotator cuff, herniated discs, etc)
  • There is actually a shovel museum somewhere in Pennsylvania
Im such a geek.
